California Cup: “Be Valiant” Comes to an End

As someone involved in Los Angeles Valiant event coverage since their initial team announcement, writer Austin Hanlin delves into what has changed from their first local event to their last, the California Cup.

The first significant difference I detected when I was heading to the Esports Arena for a second LA Valiant event was the energy. As I was driving by, I spotted the team walking inside and saw that they had already begun setting up on the street; I could tell I was in for a fun time. As I made my way to the door and inside, Valiant fans had already packed the entire arena full a good hour before my arrival. The energy at this point was quite lively as the University teams were playing on the stage, fans from the schools cheering them on as they played. I watched for a few minutes, observing the packed crowd before I made my way up to the VIP section on the overlook, which was also packed full. All of it was not so surprising once I learned that they had sold out of VIP tickets the first week they were available;  they’d also sold out of all general admission tickets just the night before.

OWL’s First Official Cosplayer Ups the Ante For Season 2

It may be Halloween, but for the Houston Outlaws’ official cosplayer Jordyn McCoy, cosplaying is more than just dress up. It’s about rallying the community and supporting the Outlaws no matter where they are. It may seem like a dream come true to represent the Outlaws all around the nation – and it is, says McCoy – but it all started in Texas with a lot of hard work and dedication. McCoy is the first ever official contracted cosplayer in esports, a position the Outlaws created entirely for her when they saw her impact in the esports community back in Austin.

A Step Forward and Giving Back: An Interview with Philadelphia Fusion’s Elk

When the Philadelphia Fusion announced that Elijah Hudson “Elk” Gallagher would be promoted to the team’s roster going into Season 2, the former Fusion University player was so excited he forgot to send out a tweet. And when he did, he couldn’t even find the words to express his excitement:

“Elk has been an outstanding player for us both in game and out,” said Philadelphia Fusion president Tucker Roberts. “That’s why we promoted him to captain Season 2.  It’s easy to forget how young he is given his maturity and professionalism. He plays a cerebral style and studies the game constantly.  We’re all very excited to have him join Fusion for the 2019 season.”

Speaking with Elk last night, it was easy to see the maturity that Roberts and other Fusion veterans commonly bring up when it comes to his promotion. Elk spoke of his growth as a player with not only the guidance he received as part of Fusion’s academy team, but from professional Overwatch players who took the time to give him advice when he reached out to them. The support main is hoping to use his new platform to not only improve his role in-game, but give support back to the Overwatch community in hopes of helping other passionate players reach their dreams.
