Former Los Angeles Gladiators DPS Joon-seong “Asher” Choi has been signed, alongside support player Joo-seong “RoKy” Park.
Asher saw a strong performance on the Gladiators and was part of the Stage 3 and 4 playoffs, ultimately helping LA place 4th in the inaugural season after losing in playoffs to the London Spitfire. RoKy is a former Contenders Korea player, playing for season 1 victors X6 Gaming before being transferred to Seven for Trials in season 3 of Contenders Korea.
Much of the Defiant roster is built from strong Contenders players who will be seeing their first time in the big leagues. The roster consists of:
- Se-hyeon “Neko” Park on support
- Jae-yoon “Aid” Go on support
- Kang-jae “envy” Lee on flex
- Gyeong-mu “Yakpung” Jo on tank
- Seung-hyun “Ivy” Lee on DPS
- Do-hyung “Stellar” Lee on DPS
Neko, Asher and envy are the only players with Overwatch League experience – Neko played admirably for Boston and envy played for the LA Valiant in the preseason before moving to Contenders Korea. Stellar, Yakpung and Ivy all have history with O2 Ardent, a team that RoKy was also briefly on. Aid spent two seasons playing in Contenders North America for GG Esports and OpTic Academy.
These final additions round out Toronto as another all-Korean team playing under a western name, alongside the likes of the London Spitfire. We’ll see them in action when season 2 of the Overwatch League kicks off on February 14th!
