Minority Report Profiles: Izayaki

Experiencing Tranquility: Kim “Izayaki” Min-chul

Courtesy of Blizzard Entertainment

With GOATS still going strong despite some upcoming changes potentially shutting it down, however you feel about this polarizing meta, there is a silver lining among the 3-3 clouds: watching incredible Zenyatta game-play, given that it’s arguably the closest to prime DPS play that we are currently going to get.

Someone who has made a name for himself as a breakout Zenyatta player this season is Kim “Izayaki” Min-chul from the Los Angeles Valiant. Initially playing for both KNC Vmax and NC Foxes back in Overwatch Contenders Korea as a flex support before being signed as Valiant’s 12th player;it has become obvious that Izayaki’s precision-level accuracy, improved communications, and clutch plays have garnered attention of late.

I spoke to him last week (on his birthday!) after the Valiant’s game against NYXL along with Andrew Kim, the team’s translator.

Minority Report: Ride or Die

These are the things I cannot do in Overwatch League:

  1. Power rankings.
  2. Statistical analysis.
  3. Strategy dissection.
  4. Gaining access to team meetings, scrims, or VOD reviews.

Minority Report: When Worlds Collide

In this week’s Minority Report, the LA Valiant and the LA Kings hockey team collide in a crossover for the ages.

In college, I used to watch a lot of old science fiction movies. The 1950’s were rife with them due to an otherworldly fascination with space travel and new technologies. One of my favorite ones was  “When Worlds Collide,” which depicts humanity’s reaction when we discover that a rogue star is on a collision course with Earth. While I watched the inevitable frenzy that would occur in an apocalyptic situation like that, something stood out to me: the fact that people weren’t even willing to accept the situation until it was too late. The five stages of grief shone in full, global display, as the world they knew was about to be literally annihilated.

Minority Report: A Year I needed

It’s December 31st, the year is over, and I’m sitting here at the computer, slightly hungover, tore up from the floor up, trying to process it all. My latest self-assignment for Minority Report was a year-end article that summed up the year on a positive note, as someone pointed out to me that my last few pieces have been pretty tonally negative. Back to the Grind: Watchpoint 2019 Preview

Finally, after months of waiting, the first Watchpoint of Season 2 aired — and provided the much anticipated opening week schedule. There were some big changes that will be implemented in season 2 in the hopes of providing a much more dynamic year and taking into consideration the players’ needs.

First, the eight expansion teams were formally introduced. In the Atlantic Division, the Atlanta Reign, Paris Eternal, Toronto Defiant, and Washington Justice were added, along with the Chengdu Hunters, Guangzhou Charge, Hangzhou Spark, and  Vancouver Titans for the Pacific Division.

Minority Report: I Am Not Your Brown Person

I don’t think I’ve experienced anything more polarizing than Blizzcon.

I tried and failed several times to write a Minority Report feature on it. Why wouldn’t I? It was my first Blizzcon, it was on my birthday, and my best friends surprised me with a supreme Brigitte armor set, complete with a mace to put directly in your face. I expected to write about me cheering for Australia instead of USA during World Cup (I was made an honorary Australian, don’t @ me), being pissed that Ashe was the new character (B.O.B is cool though), and struggling, first-world-problems style, with how the Brigitte armor significantly decreased my New York walking speed (I was called “Speedy” in high school for a reason). The whole weekend went by in a flash, but I remember a lot of smiles, a lot of incredible support for my cosplay, and a lot of time surrounded by the best friends a woman could ask for.

The Great Jebait: LA Gladiators Turn OWL Twitter Upside-Down

Okay, just to be clear, I am the hypewoman for the Los Angeles Valiant, but like my mama always said, “Game recognize game.”

So, as I am casually scrolling the hell that is Twitter and talking to my friends, Suddenly, I read this bombshell of a tweet:

Minority Report: The True California Cup Champions

In this week’s Minority Report, Briggsy recaps her experiences at both California Cup showmatches between the Los Angeles Valiant and the San Francisco Shock. The true champions, we find out, aren’t necessarily the players – especially when things get rough.

College is about making mistakes. My mistake was going to college.

I grew up watching movies and nonfiction testimonials about college sororities providing lifelong bonds, fun parties that would become stories to tell my grandkids, and classes that were engaging and interactive to prepare me for a lifetime of success. I was excited to start this new chapter in my life after enduring a rather miserable high school experience. Turns out not much changes after high school. In college, I didn’t fit in, the material didn’t interest me, and most of my time was spent dealing with lecherous instructors and abusive relationships. I left unceremoniously after I simply stopped going to classes.

Minority Report Profiles: LA Valiant’s Jun-Hyeok “Bunny” Chae

Forgive my absence, folks.

I had a hell of a few weeks, so much so that I write this with literally no voice and sheer willpower. My time at California Cup was interesting, to say the least, and one of the highlights of my experience there was being able to talk to Jun-Hyeok “Bunny” Chae from the Los Angeles Valiant. Once known for being a Tracer one-trick, Bunny has been spending his offseason practicing other hitscan heroes and hoping to truly make his mark once again in Overwatch League. And from what I’ve seen from his streams, I’ve no doubt this will be the case. I was joined by Bunny and translator Andrew Kim for this interview.

Minority Report: The Super Fans Speak Out

One of my favorite songs of all time is “Distractions” by Zero 7. In that song, the singer describes her habit of doing something that I do all of the time: instead of expressing her deepest appreciation for someone she loves and cares about, she instead makes fun, actively goes out of her way to warn them that she is nothing but trouble through self-deprecation, and ultimately hides her strong feelings behind her humor. One particular line makes this explicitly clear:

“I only make jokes to distract myself from the truth.”
